About Alyssa:

Alyssa Wright is the Principal and Founder of Wright Collective, a social impact consulting firm focused on helping nonprofit organizations access resources to meet their missions. She has deep experience in global social change, with clients including gender equality, birth justice, and international and refugee organizations. She is a published freelance writer, and sought-after speaker, and has developed the talent of a variety of fundraising professionals around the globe. Alyssa is an active member of her community in Southern Maine and raises three beautiful children while contributing her time and talents to the arts and human service sectors in her community.

Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) have become one of the most powerful tools in a gift planner’s toolkit, enabling donors to maximize their philanthropic impact while minimizing tax liabilities. IRA giving appeals to a broad range of donors—whether through naming a charity as a beneficiary, establishing a charitable gift annuity or remainder trust, or making an outright gift through a qualified charitable distribution. The opportunities are abundant and versatile.

This presentation will explore the key guidelines governing IRA charitable giving, examine the associated tax implications, and provide practical strategies for integrating IRA-based gifts into your development efforts.

About James:

James is the Senior Associate Director of Gift Planning at Dartmouth College. He recently joined the board of the New Hampshire/Vermont Council of Charitable Gift Planners, reflecting his deep commitment to advancing philanthropic strategy in the region. Prior to his role at Dartmouth, James served as Director of Gift Planning at both Milton Academy and Bates College, where he helped donors align their charitable goals with the priorities of the institution.

Before transitioning to the nonprofit sector, James practiced estate planning and tax law and operated his own trusts and estates practice in Hartford, Connecticut. His extensive legal background continues to inform his work in helping donors make meaningful, tax-efficient contributions.
